Konark, the Hindu Sun-god temple, is situated on the sands of the Chandrabhaga River. It is located in Puri district in Orissa.
The Konark temple was built around seven hundred years ago. It was built by Emperor Langula Narasimha Dev of the Ganga dynasty, who ruled his empire from his capital, Puri. Twelve hundred masons worked for sixteen years to complete the construction of this temple. This temple is unique in its Cheet Ural beauty.
The famous temple of Lord Jagannath in Puri is known for its vastness. The old temple of Shiva in Bhubaneshwar is famous for its exquisite sculpture on its entire body. Both the grandeur of the Puri temple and the sculptural art of the Bhubaneshwar temple are blended together in the temple at Konark.
The temple was shaped like a chariot of the Sun and was based on huge stone wheels. At present nothing remains except the façade and grand statues of the temple which is eleven hundred feet high. The social practices of ancient Orissa are well depicted on the walls of the façade.
